§ 2-426. Storage, claim of cremains.

  • (a)

    After cremation, the coroner shall arrange for storage of the cremains for six months, and such cremains may be claimed during that time by next of kin, as provided hereafter.

    (b)

    In the event that the next of kin desires to claim the cremains of an unclaimed corpse in possession of the coroner, they shall obtain a release with regard to the cremains from the funeral home, mortuary, or crematorium performing the cremation. Such institution may require the next of kin to pay their regular fee for cremation prior to providing such release. In such event, the funeral home, mortuary, or crematorium shall refund to the county any amount paid by it for performing the cremation.

    (c)

    In the event that cremains are not claimed after a period of six months from the date of cremation, the coroner shall arrange for their interment or other appropriate disposal, as allowed by law.
